Baker & McKenzie for Energy Efficiency

Baker & McKenzie’s Climate Change and Energy Efficiency Practice was one of the first of its kind to be established and is now one of the most dynamically growing practices in the field of climate change and energy efficiency in Russia and the CIS. In 2004 we started advising major foreign companies and Russian and foreign regulators on various climate change and energy efficiency matters (including Kyoto Protocol-related issues) and were involved in the creation of related enactments, making us one of the leading law firms with climate change and energy efficiency experience in Russia.
We work closely with the regulatory authorities, leading investment firms, Russian project owners, rating agencies, insurance agencies and various service providers in setting the stage for Kyoto Protocol-related projects in Russia and the CIS. We have also worked together with the Russian Ministry of Economic Development (MED) on identifying the obstacles to the development of Joint Implementation (JI) projects and Green Investment Schemes (GIS) in Russia, and are currently advising various regulators on
improving the legal framework for implementation of JI projects in Russia.
We have unique experience in the review of contractual structures related to the development of Kyoto Protocol-related projects (including JI projects) and projects involving voluntary emission reductions in Russia. Our services are increasingly called upon by foreign companies and Russian producers.
We have participated in the structuring of Russian JI projects (including in the form of straightforward transactions), involving such tradable instruments as Assigned Amount Units (AAUs) and Emission Reduction Units (ERUs).
Our practice group gained unique experience in structuring and advising on trading voluntary emission reductions generated in Russia, involving such tradable instruments as “Voluntary Emission Reductions” (VERs) in a number of multipurpose projects, and structuring corporate and profitsharing relationships based on Kyoto Protocol-related projects.
